Confirm your level and blueprint window first, because the annual blueprint sets the format and weightings for your sitting. Then treat every practice question as a selection problem: name the decision, list the facts that change the analysis, apply the technique, and state one limitation. Free tests work best inside a loop — diagnose, drill the two weakest error causes, retest, and log what changed.
What the qualification assesses
CIMA's CGMA Professional Qualification has three levels — Operational, Management and Strategic. Each level combines three Objective Tests (labelled E, P and F) with one Case Study exam that simulates a workplace role.
The blueprint documents published by AICPA & CIMA set out in detail what is examinable across the nine Objective Tests and the three Case Study examinations. The blueprints are based on the syllabus, published annually, and describe the format, structure and weightings of each assessment.
The Case Study exams are business simulations built around a role summary, so they reward applied judgement rather than isolated recall. That design is why scenario reading, not just topic knowledge, decides your marks at each level.
Question counts, time limits and topic weightings are published inside the blueprint PDFs themselves, so download the blueprint for your sitting rather than relying on third-party summaries.
| Level | Objective Tests | Case Study exam |
|---|---|---|
| Operational | E1, P1, F1 | Operational Case Study |
| Management | E2, P2, F2 | Management Case Study |
| Strategic | E3, P3, F3 | Strategic Case Study |
Which blueprint version applies to your exam
Blueprints are versioned by year. The 2026/2027 blueprint governs Objective Tests scheduled from January 2026 to January 2027 and Case Study exams in May, August and November 2026 plus February 2027. The 2027/2028 blueprint covers the following cycle.
As of September 2026, both the 2026/2027 and the 2027/2028 blueprints are published and downloadable. Match your planned sitting to the correct window, because the applicable blueprint defines what is examinable for you.
If you booked an exam date, confirm the window against that date before you finalise a study plan. A sitting early in a window sits under the same blueprint as a sitting late in it, but a January Objective Test can fall into the next version.
| Blueprint | Objective Test window | Case Study windows |
|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | January 2026 – January 2027 | May, August, November 2026; February 2027 |
| 2027/2028 | January 2027 – January 2028 | May, August, November 2027; February 2028 |
What changed in the 2026 syllabus
CIMA launched an upgraded syllabus for 2026. It strengthens finance business partnering, analytical thinking and strategic planning, and adds sustainability content and financial technology topics.
The announced sustainability additions include green finance, environmental costing and disclosure under IFRS S1 and S2. Technology content now covers generative AI. Both changes reflect a stated goal of preparing candidates for finance business partnering roles that combine technology with human insight.
If you took exams under the pre-2026 syllabus, those changes did not affect your 2025 sittings; the new syllabus applies to the assessment windows listed under the 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 blueprints.
CIMA also offers more than 50 hours of free study support materials for the qualification. Use them alongside, not instead of, your own question practice.
Scenario practice: choose the technique the facts call for
Because the Case Study exams simulate a role and the Objective Tests embed rules in business facts, the core practice skill is selection. Before answering any practice question, name the decision, list which facts change the analysis, apply the named technique, and state one limitation.
A learner who has memorised a technique can still fail a scenario question, because the question is really asking which facts matter. Spare capacity, a binding contract, an ethical threat or a funding constraint can each flip the correct answer.
The exercise below is original practice, not a copied exam item, and every premise you need is stated in the prompt. Work it before reading the answer.
Practice exercise
A factory sells a product for $50 per unit. Variable production cost is $30 per unit, and each unit absorbs $12 of fixed overhead, giving a full cost of $42 per unit. A customer offers a one-off contract for 1,000 units at $36 per unit. Stated premises: fixed overheads do not change with this contract; in normal trading each existing unit sold earns $20 of contribution; the contract will not be repeated; the factory has no other use for any idle capacity. Decide whether to accept the contract (a) when the factory has idle capacity, and (b) when the factory is already selling everything it can make.
Show answer
(a) Accept. With idle capacity, fixed overheads are unchanged, so the relevant cost is the $30 variable cost. Each contract unit contributes $36 − $30 = $6, so the contract adds $6 × 1,000 = $6,000 to profit. That $36 sits below the $42 full cost is irrelevant, because the $12 absorption does not change with this decision. (b) Reject. At full capacity, every contract unit displaces an existing sale worth $20 of contribution. The contract gains $6,000 but forgoes $20 × 1,000 = $20,000, a net loss of $14,000. In contribution terms the relevant cost per unit is effectively $30 + $20 = $50, which exceeds the $36 offer.
The same rule — only cash flows and contributions that actually change with the decision count — produces opposite answers under the two capacity premises. The deciding fact is one sentence in the scenario, which is exactly the kind of trigger sentence you should write out, in one line, for every practice question you attempt.
Turn practice-test errors into a study plan
Run free practice tests inside a repeatable loop: diagnose, drill your weakest error causes, rehearse full written justifications, then retest. What counts is completed improvement cycles, not a fixed number of tests.
Take a timed practice set under no-notes conditions and log every error by cause rather than by topic. Drill the two causes that appear most often with targeted questions, then attempt an integrated scenario where you write the full justification, not just the answer choice.
Retest with a fresh set and compare error categories. If the same category repeats across consecutive tests, it needs a different fix — a knowledge gap needs study, a selection slip needs the trigger-sentence habit from the exercise above.
As a labelled study routine, score each rehearsed scenario against three questions: did you name the technique and quote the trigger fact; is the computation or analysis complete with stated assumptions; and is the recommendation tied to specific facts with one limitation noted. This is self-assessment advice, not an official marking scheme.
- Error log fields: the question focus, the technique you chose, the technique the facts required, and whether the miss was a knowledge gap, a selection slip, or weak justification.
- Write one line per question before checking answers: the trigger sentence and the technique you selected.
- One complete diagnostic-to-retest cycle teaches you more than two extra unreviewed test sets.
Next steps
Anchor your plan in the official documents, then practise decisions. Download the blueprint for your sitting, use CIMA's free study support, and work free practice questions through the improvement loop.
Start with the structure in this guide, confirm your level and window, and let the blueprint's weightings shape how much time each area gets. Then convert what you learn into selection practice using the exercise and loop above.
